I remember watching Oprah and seeing Nate Berkus share his approachable, unique and creative decorating tips. I always thought that putting a space together took a lot of effort and money, but he was always able to demonstrate otherwise. I mean sure, he could blow a huge budget on decking out a gorgeous space, but he made design achievable by sharing his great ideas and love for design with all of O’s fans.
The more I got to know about him and his story, the more impressed I was. He was an entrepreneur and started his own business at a very young age. How bold – and how aspirational for me! It was so encouraging to see successful people who started doing something they loved without knowing everything first, and making a go of it regardless of however stacked the odds were. I watched a lot of Oprah, ergo Nate, while I was in high school and my early university years while trying to figure out my next steps in life. Entrepreneurship was the choice, so seeing people like Nate made it feel doable. Nate became wildly successful over the years, and he does credit part of his success to Oprah (I mean…yeah…Oprah? That’s amazing).
When I was given the opportunity to speak with Nate here in Toronto, I could barely contain my excitement (and oh, how envious my girlfriends were!). I couldn’t wait to bend his ear about all of my decor and design questions and of course, find out exactly how high he ranked on the ‘neat freak’ scale. I got to hear what being a new dad was like (Poppy was 3 only weeks old when we met!) and he also helped me learn some great ways to create artful storage solutions and walked me through a very big thing in his eyes, scent decor (love).
Watch the interview video and hear all of Nate’s space-beautifying tips as well as some of him and Jeremiah’s deepest, darkest cleaning secrets. Oh, and did I mention that Nate’s hysterical?

He seems a bit obsessed with design and order. But, I like the rule “one thing in, one thing out.”
Hi Melissa, my toilet bowl seems to have a 5% back flow of whatever’s been flushed earlier. I always have to flush second tine few minutes later . Do you have a solution? Thanks .
I am allergic to smells it gives me and asthma attack. So natural smells the way to go. Vingar does not bother me whatsoever. When I go to friends houses I have to check to see if they have plugging at their home.
That was very well done Melissa. Don’t @jeremiah. Jeremiah will be able to form a “persecuted group”. My husband will be one of his first members.
I can definitely relate to “Back off the dishwasher!” 🙂
