I love DIY recipes and essential oils, so any DIY recipe that uses one of my favorite essential oil scents, lavender, is a win in my books. Today I’m going to teach you how to make the best DIY linen spray: DIY Lavender Linen Spray!

I love linen spray because it makes your sheets feel fresh, even if it’s been a few days since you did the laundry. I use linen spray year-round, but it’s especially relaxing in the summer when it’s sweltering outside, and you and your bed need a little refresher.

How Often Should You Wash Your Sheets?

Before we get into the recipe, let’s talk about everyone’s least favorite subject, laundry. Linen spray will absolutely refresh your sheets. But it can’t save dirty sheets that really need a wash. So how often should you wash your sheets anyway?

Technically, we should all be washing our sheets once a week. Our sheets collect our body oils, dead skin cells, stray hairs, and who knows what else. Even if you shower right before bed, you still perspire during your sleep.

However, there’s a lot of laundry, cleaning, and real life to live outside of washing your sheets every week! So you can often stretch this to every two weeks, especially if you have a refreshing linen spray to revive your bed.

And when it is time to do the laundry, check out Laundry Packs 101 to learn how to use laundry packs and if it’s time to make the switch from liquid detergent.

The Best DIY Linen Spray

Improve your night’s sleep by winding down with freshly spritzed linens. Using a DIY linen spray helps refresh your linens, making them feel cleaner. And the essential oil leaves a gentle scent behind to help you catch those elusive Z’s.

All you need for this recipe is three simple ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup distilled water
  • 1/2 cup cheap flavorless and colorless vodka
  • 30-40 drops of lavender essential oil

Add all your ingredients to a spray bottle. Here’s a pro tip: always add the essential oil after your other liquid. This helps everything combine better and prevents oil from sticking to the sides of your spray bottle.

Always shake your linen spray well right before use. Then, remove your blanket or comforter and lightly mist your sheets. Let this dry for about 20 minutes before getting into bed. I like to mist my sheets at the beginning of my nighttime routine, so by the time I’m finished moisturizing, my bed is ready.

While many of my recipes state that essential oils are optional, in this recipe, the lavender oil is essential for that fresh feeling and smell. Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular essential oils out there. I use lavender essential oil for this particular recipe since it is hands down the best essential oil to help relax you and get you ready for bed.

Essential Oil Safety Precautions

This recipe uses more essential oil than most of my DIY recipes, so I’d like to take a minute to talk about essential oil safety. For detailed information about how to use essential oils, safety precautions, DIY recipes, and more, read Everything You Need to Know About Cleaning with Essential Oils. But to summarize some of that safety information here, remember that essential oils should never be taken internally and always diluted with water or a carrier oil.

And don’t forget that pets are usually very sensitive to essential oils. Never use essential oils near your pets or on items that your pet has contact with. If you have more questions about pet safety and essential oils, speak to your veterinarian.

Refresh Your Linens

This isn’t a cleaning recipe, but it’s still one of my favorite DIYs. There’s something so luxurious and relaxing about falling into a soft, fresh bed that smells like lavender. Once you try this spray, you’ll never want boring unscented sheets again.

  1. What is the purpose of the vodka??? Is it important? I make linen spray with just distilled water and lavender essential oil in a cobalt blue glass mister. Anything with essential oils should be kept in either amber glass or cobalt blue glass containers, never clear or plastic or metal.

    • Vodka is a great disinfectant! Think about the amount of bacteria / germs that are in your bed + time in between washing / changing out your bedding, it’s great for taking care of that issue in between washes. I think it’s also great to spray your mattress with vodka. Vodka also helps neutralize any stinky or stale odors so that you’re not just masking it with the essential oil.
