Glass cleaner and window cleaner don’t have to be your something blue to work well. It doesn’t even have to be your something new, well, not new from a store. In fact, store-bought glass cleaner and window cleaner cost approximately $4, while DIY window and glass cleaner can cost pennies and be made with ingredients you likely already have in your home.

And you can make glass cleaner and window cleaner at home even if you’re not getting married! OK, OK, bad segue. But it’s true! After years of experimenting, I’ve developed the best glass cleaner for the Clean My Space community, and it’s only three ingredients.

DIY Glass and Window Cleaner

  • 1 cup white vinegar (OR scented vinegar)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 5 – 10 drops essential oil (optional)

Add this to a clean spray bottle and shake well, and you’ve got a perfect glass and window cleaner.

The essential oils are optional because they don’t add to the cleaner itself; they simply mask the smell of vinegar. If you don’t have essential oils or don’t want to use them, you can try citrus-infused vinegar.

DIY Infused Vinegar

You heard me right; you’re getting two easy peasy DIY recipes in this blog today. Citrus-infused vinegar takes seconds to make (plus waiting time) and is the solution for people who don’t like the smell of vinegar or essential oils.

  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • a handful of citrus fruit peels

To make citrus-infused vinegar, add vinegar to a clean glass jar along with citrus fruit peels. Let this sit for about four weeks in your fridge. Strain well before use, and you’ve got scented vinegar for all your DIY cleaning recipes.

  1. There are several different kinds of glass cleaners on the market nowadays. Window and glass cleaners are created with mostly water. You require the very best car window cleaners so you can clear dirt from your windshield.

  2. Between my curious toddler and overly-hyper canine, I am always cleaning windows and glass surfaces. I cant wait to try using coffee filters instead of paper towels for the lint free finish, Thanks for the tip!

  3. I have noticed cleaner recipes are not consistent on this site. Here, her glass cleaner is water, vinegar, and cornstarch. In another post it is 1-1/2 C water, 1/4 C vinegar, 1/4 C rubbing alcohol.

    • Hi Dee – There are a few different ways to make an effective glass cleaner, each with its own merits. Generally, water in vinegar are essentials, but sometimes other ingredients have added benefits. In the case of corn starch, this results in a more heavy duty outdoor glass cleaner.

    • Dee, please take into consideration that people grow. People change. People learn new things. People refine their recipes. So what I will be doing, is using her most recent recipe for a glass cleaner, because if a different older recipe was so good, she would not have changed it. It’s safe to assume she’s not gonna switch to a worse recipe, so unless a special reason is stated, the most recent one is the best and the one you should use.

  4. Hi There Melissa I have been trying to clean the bottom of my casserole dishes which are all clear pie plates which are all clear glass pie plate. Of course I don’t back pies in them silly.. I don’t use them to make pies we bake all kinds of things in them so they have all kinds of grease build up. of food. chicken, fish mostly fish.. But I’ve looked through your videos and I can’t seem to find it maybe I’m just not putting the right words in the search bar.. Not getting dishwasher until may please help OCD about cleanliness.

  5. I think what you are doing is great, trying to find more environmentally better products to use. I would say for most though, a cheap squeegee and a tiny amount of washing up liquid to water will clean your windows better than anything else.
