Fabric softener helps to relax and soften fibres during the laundering process.  If you love the concept but don’t love the waxy coating and strong scent traditional fabric softeners leave behind, try this extremely simple method instead.

  • 1 jug of white vinegar
  • 50 drops essential oils (the scent will be mildly present and oils will not stain clothing, don’t worry)

Select essential oils you love, and keep in mind that those with anti-mildew properties such as lavender will help keep your clothing and your machine free of that musty smell.  Keep the jug in your laundry room and fill your softener dispenser with this solution each time you do a wash and see how lovely your clothing comes out – fresh, soft and clean!

  1. I have been told that vinegar can destroy plumbing pipes. Is it true, or is it safe to use Vinegar instead of softener? The same question applies for using Vinegar instead of bought sparkling products for dishwashers?

  2. I love this idea and I’ve been using white vinegar for a while to soften my clothes and I love using lavendar & orange mixed together- how much do you recommend using per cycle? I just dump a bunch of white vinegar in there and I feel like I’m overkilling it. Much love from a college student in NC!
