If you are not a fan of bleach but desire that whitening and brightening magic, here’s something you can try.  Make your own solution to help whiten and brighten, disinfect and deodorize.  This is perfect for soaking items which are stained or yellowed; think socks, teeshirts, towels, tea towels, etc.  This solution will not keep, so make it up on an as-needed basis.

  • 2 lemons, cut in chunks
  • 1 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide
  •  3/4 cup washing soda
  • Warm water

Place the lemons and hydrogen peroxide in a blender and blend together on high (include peels).  Bonus: this will also clean, deodorize and brighten your blender!  Then, fill a bucket half way with warm water and add the slurry along with the washing soda.  Stir well so that everything dissolves and then add in your garments.  Allow to soak for several hours (up to 8), and then rinse with warm water and launder as usual.
