Castille soap is a great natural cleaner on its own, it is made from olive oil. Greasy messes occur in the kitchen mostly, and this is a cleaning product you can whip up as needed to tackle those greasy situations. Baking soda helps to provide natural abrasion, and citrus essential oils help lift away grease. Degreasers are usually quite strong and can run about $5 per bottle. Here’s my inexpensive solution:
- 1/4 cup castille soap
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 20 drops orange essential oil
Mix well in a bowl to create a paste, and apply to affected area with a damp sponge or cloth. Let it sit for a few moments and then begin to gently scrub with a sponge. Rinse well and dry the area.

Whipped up a small batch of this (I did 1 tsp of Baking Soda and 1/2 a tsp of dish soap) and applied it to my stove top. After 5 minutes I came back with a sponge and the caked on grease from months (yes months) came off! I didn’t put any EO in my solution and it still worked great.

Thanks for this post. I would like to do more with DIY cleaning products but I have a conundrum. I have two cats who think they rule the roost and are constantly where they are not supposed to be. Because of this, I am very wary of using essential oils, like citrus, which can be poisonous to cats. The only three oils that I have been able to find that are supposed to be okay are Cedarwood, Lemongrass, and Rosemary. I know these won’t have the same properties as citrus, but could any of these be used as an alternative? Otherwise, should I just make sure everything gets rinsed off thoroughly? I would really appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks!

I’m loving these 31 days of DIY cleaners! Cheap and non-toxic is a win/win. Question: I’ve only seen Castille soap in bar form. Are there powders or flakes available or do I grate the bar to create the 1/4 Cup measurement?
I believe she was referring to the liquid form of castile soap. Dr. Bronners is a well known brand and there are many others to choose from. IMO Dr. B’s is the best.

I see you’re in Toronto – do you know where I can buy castille soap in the Ottawa area? It’s expensive online where I’ve been looking. I’ve just been using 50/50 vinegar and water and a pinch of soda. I love your tips and get them by email. The dryer foil balls are great!
