Over the years I’ve collected tons of amazing cleaning tips and tricks, but some are too small to make a video about. You know, a video takes time to create and edit, and these tips while worth it, would take up too much of our precious time.

So today, we’ve compiled 5 of our favorite little cleaning tips, or cleaning hacks, as we are going to call them, and will show you how they’re done. If you like this idea, we can get some more hacks together for you!

If you need to add some new cleaning tools to your arsenal, then look no further then Maker’s Clean Products! They offer affordable cloths and mops to get you on the right track to a cleaner and fresher home.

Newspaper in trash

I love this for two reasons. Firstly, I hate, with a capital R, smelly, leaky garbage. I mean, nothing grosses me out more. So, if you are not a fan of those green garbage fumes and crusty drips and drops of garbage juice, all you need to do is crumple up some newspaper and place it in the bottom of a fresh garbage bag – you can do this for the kitchen and even for your bigger garbage bags. The newspaper helps absorb odours and leaks. Amazing!

Hanger tag trick

I did this in one of our recent videos, and some of you caught onto it. For those that didn’t, here’s the best way to hang your clothing so that it doesn’t fall down. Slip the garment tag through the top of the hanger hook and then place the shoulders on your hanger as usual. Now, your clothing will stay put! If your clothing comes with a ribbon you can use that as a hanging aide, and you can also criss-cross ribbon straps to help avoid items from falling off the hangers.

Clean a blender

I love my blender to bits and pieces, and use it every single morning for my smoothie – which involves kale, spinach, berries, chia, flax, coconut milk and a bunch of other colorful, sticky and seedy ingredients. Anyway, it gets messy every single morning and can be quite the clean up task, especially where time is limited. So, to clean it up, just fill it with warm water and a drop of dish soap, then turn it on and blend for a few seconds and voila! Be sure to rinse well and leave to dry. I leave my belnder parts in order but i never close the lid in order to allow everything to dry properly and that avoids mildew growth.

Razor to remove pilling

If you get those tiny fabric balls on your clothing, you are a victim of pilling. The good news is, there is an easy way to get rid of them. You can use a dull razor blade to ‘shave’ off the tiny clusters and have a wad of tape handy to easily clean the razor. By using an old razor, it’s dull enough that it won’t ruin the clothing but even with that in mind, be careful to not ruin your clothing! If you don’t have one available, you can use a cheap pumice stone to quickly buff off the tiny balls using short strokes and then grabbing the pile of pills.

Corn starch, chalk or baby powder absorbs grease stains

And finally, should you get a grease stain – you know the rule is to act super fast. Blot up as much oil as you can with a paper towel by pressing down on the stain several times and then, colour over the stain with plain white chalk or sprinkle some baby powder or corn starch on the stain. The powder will absorb the oil on contact and you’ll see it start to form a crust after a few moments. Gently brush off the crust (being careful not to re-sent the stain) and then pre-treat with laundry detergent and launder the item. Done.

so, there are 5 great cleaning hacks – but now it’s your turn, this is a call to the clean my space community – Do you have any that you want to share? Maybe I’ll feature your tip in another video!

  1. I’m sure you’ve heard of this one but I say it anyway. When I have accidentally gotten ink on my clothing I spray Hair Spray on it and it gets it right off.

  2. Two little tricks/hacks that i find really handy are: 1.if you have a blood stain break a dispersable aspirin in half slightly dampen the bottom of one half and rub it into the stain, it breaks down the blood and lifts it off, then put the item in your laundry as usual but add the other half of aspirin to the washing….Another trick is if you are washing white net curtains or sheets add white vinegar to the laundry or pre-soak the items in a mixture of white vinegar, water and detergent, it keeps them whiter for longer and they don’t absorb smells so quickly. Loving the videos

    • Melissa,
I love your videos so much! You have such a great presence in the videos and you get to the point. I love that! So many of the cleaning videos go off topic, but you don’t! I do have one question, it is about those disposable wipes. Do the Lysol & Chlorox wipes really disinfect? I use them all the time and I just want to be sure I am really cleanning my points of contact. They are so easy to use and I don’t wipe after I use them so I assume that anything that is disinfecting is left behind. Thank you!

      • One of the things I love about these videos is how the products she uses are simple and often natural, in the case of cleaning with vinegar and baking soda. Denise, you are wasting a lot of money using those wipes, contributing to the increase of garbage in landfills, and you’re leaving chemical residue all over your house. Consider switching to vinegar and microfiber cloths… you can even subscribe on Amazon to have a fresh set of microfiber cloths sent to you at your convenience.

But to see if your disinfectant is really disinfecting, you should see if it is an EPA approved disinfectant. If it isn’t you can make one easily following this recipe that I found on the CDC website:

Add 1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 quart (4 cups) of water. For a larger supply of disinfectant, add ¼ cup of bleach to 1 gallon (16 cups) of water.
Apply the solution to the surface with a cloth.
Let it stand for 3 to 5 minutes.
Rinse the surface with clean water.

Personally I do not use bleach because I do not want dangerous chemicals all over my home. This website gives a breakdown of bleach vs vinegar: http://www.rodalenews.com/natural-disinfectant

But basically the takeaway seems to be this:
If you know someone has been sick, use bleach
If its an object that is touched frequently (like doorknobs) you may want to use bleach but you need to rinse afterward
For general disinfecting, vinegar is fine
