What’s the last thing you want to do first thing in the morning? There’s a good change you answered ‘make the bed’. You’re not alone, and today I’m going to give you five extremely compelling reasons why making your bed each day, despite your enormous urge to skip it, is one of the most important things you’ll do for yourself.

It’s a Great Way to Start your Day!

It’s a really good feeling to put a checkmark in the daily to-do list before breakfast – basically you’ve already been productive and accomplished an undesirable task – so, yay. If you can make your bed, and you know the mental gymnastics that required, what else can you conquer today? Exactly!

It Makes Your Room Look Cleaner!

That’s right, by my calculations the bed accounts for at least 35% of your room and if your bed is made, your room will instantly look cleaner. A mess begets a mess, so if you can circumvent this at 7 AM, you’re doing pretty well. You’ll feel more inclined to respect your room and not mess it up throughout the day. Sounds woo woo, but just try it and see for yourself.

Seriously, it takes like 2 minutes

..and if you get good at it, you can do it in less than a minute. Chad makes the bed in our house since he wakes up later than I do, and he’s a basically the iron chef of bed making. As with anything, when you do it enough times, you get pretty good at it and can accomplish the task faster. If you want to learn a surefire way to make your bed, I’ve got our famous ‘How to make your bed in under two minutes’ video, which you can see here.

Good habits = Good Life

I’ve mentioned this in a bunch in past posts and videos, and for good reason.  Creating positive habits is the best way to create a better life. Making your bed is such a simple thing to do, you can easily nail it, and you’ll build up your confidence to take on newer and bigger habits which will only lead to better outcomes for you. If you don’t believe me, talk to the most successful person you know and ask them about their positive habits. You’ll quickly see the light.

A Better Night’s Sleep

That’s right, you’ll even sleep better – and this is great news for those who toss and turn. I’m not just making this up, my friends, this was proven in a study done by the National Sleep Foundation (here’s the study). I quote:

It’s worth noting that those who make their beds every day or almost every day are more likely than those who do so less often or not at all to say they get a good night’s sleep every day or almost every day.

This video was inspired by another amazing video I watched of Naval Admiral William H. McRaven giving a speech about changing the world. He’s the man who commanded the SEAL team that hunted for Osama bin Laden- I highly recommend the watch, if I didn’t convince you to make your bed each day, this guy will.

Why do you make your bed every day?  Or why not – will you start to now?

  1. Boy! I need to get into the habit of making my bed! Honestly, I feel like in High School I used to do it all the time but now after college I like never do. I think it’s because of my mom haha!

  2. Dr Oz: Don’t Make Your Bed
Tanisha and Dr Oz played a game with the audience to tell whether some habits are good or bad. Do you make your bed every morning? Is being messy good or bad?

The audience thought this was bad, but Dr Oz said that being messy is sometimes a good thing. Leaving your bed unmade lets it dry out. Sweating at night creates moisture that feeds dust mites.

  3. No, I don’t because I get up and leave for work before hubby and he is not the cleaner of the house or a morning person. Then, when I get home, I sometimes straighten it up, but usually think it’s already too late, so why bother. I love a clean home and a made bed, but it’s hard to get the other five people here on board. Lol!

  4. I try everyday as I was told by an older lady I helped years ago : If the bed is made and the dishes are done your house looks straighten up . Think I have to agree. Thanks for all your tips .

  5. I have heard once that making your bed first thing in the morning is a bad idea. Because of how much you and your partner (or even your pets) can sweat during the night, if you make your bed right away you are not leaving the mattress time to air dry, and instead sealing that moisture in when you tuck your covers in. Any idea on if this is true?

  6. I, also, am for whatever makes you feel good & making my bed right away after getting out of bed, does the trick for me. I even straighten the bed when I’m feeling sick & know that I am going to jump back in it.
It does give one a feeling of accomplishment right from the get-go. Thx, again, for all your good advice & practical solutions. I’m 70 & can’t move as fast as I used to – duh – but your 3 min. bedroom/dorm cleaning tips were right on. Surely do wish I had learned some of these tricks & tips earlier on in life. Would have saved me big time! Learning to “work smarter rather than harder” is a good mantra to practice in everything you do. Thanks again for your timely & sage advice! Pls. keep on keepin’ on for us perennial learners!

  7. (5 Great Reasons to Make Your Bed) The best way to be sure that house dust mites do not come into your bed. Do not make your bed in the morning, simply air it all day long to reduce moisture from sleep. A mattress can double its weight over the years as a results of being filled with dust mites and their debris.
