In your online travels, you may have come across articles about the wonders of borax. While it is a lesser-known cleaning product, it really does have some excellent uses around the house. Borax is super effective, easy to find, and it’s inexpensive—what more can you ask for? Let’s take a look at some great DIY borax cleaning uses.

Laundry Booster

I know many of you have laundry challenges, well, borax does some amazing things for your laundry. Just add half a cup of borax to each load by adding it directly into the drum before you add the rest of your clothing. Borax is known to boost the power of your detergent, by brightening and whitening. It also helps deodorize your clothing and gets rid of stains as an added bonus.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Borax is the laziest way that you can clean your toilet. Take a cup of borax and sprinkle it around your toilet bowl—and add a little bit in the actual bowl itself—before you go to bed. With a little bit of time to do its thing, borax will break down stains, mold and mildew. So, that pink/orange stuff in your toilet? It’ll get rid of that for sure. It will also get rid of any rings and/or odors. So, when you wake up in the morning, get your toilet bowl brush out and give your toilet a little scrub and a flush. This will literally take you seconds, and you’ll see how well this works.

DIY Goo Gone

If you have a box of borax handy and you happen to have something that’s a little gooey, sticky or adhesive, you can make your own DIY Goo Gone with a little bit of borax and water. All you have to do is mix two parts borax (let’s say two tablespoons) to one-part water (one tablespoon). Create a little paste and then apply it to that sticky surface. Let it sit 10 – 15 minutes and then take an old cloth or a sponge and give it a little elbow grease. Sometimes the sticker comes off right away, at other times you may have to work it for a bit.

Grout Cleaner

Speaking of mold and mildew, another place that we see a lot of that creeping up is on grout, especially, in showers or baths. It’s really hard to get rid of because it’s a high moisture area—it’s warm, dark and damp. Bottom line, there’s a lot of stuff going on in there. Borax makes quick work of this. Just make a paste with 2 parts baking soda, to 1 part borax, and then add enough hot water to create a thick paste. Apply this to the grout with a soft brush, scrub it into the grout and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Once that’s done, all you have to do is rinse it off—and if you want extra brownie points—use a squeegee to get rid of any excess water left behind.

DIY Slime

And here’s a fun little recipe that you can try if you or your kids are so inclined to play with slime. Borax is one of the key ingredients and I’ve got the whole DIY slime recipe for you here.

  1. I love, love love your channel. I was raised with a mom who thought cleaning was like learning to walk. Back then, if the house didn’t smell like Clorox it wasn’t clean. I’m now obsessed with cleaning and your ideas have been great. I take notes as I’m watching your videos. Thank you for giving me a reason to keep cleaning, LOL!

  2. I am simply amazed at how well and how easy Borax cleans the soap scum off the bathtub and shower walls. And I don’t need to wrap myself in a hazardous materials suit or over ventilate. I mix a fairly strong solution and use a car wash brush to do the walls and for the really tough spots pour a little Borax on a wet sponge and wipe with that.

  3. I have watched your videos on cleaning with baking soda and cleaning with Borax – what is the difference?

  4. I want to share with you my FAVORITE cleaning tool. I’ve had mine for years and can’t imagine cleaning a shower or tub with out it! (Especially when your pregnant ????). I ordered mine from Walmart. But it’s a Fuller Brush product. (Who knows, maybe they would sponsor you if you shared it with your followers ?). Check it out.

  5. Excellent tips! I use it to brighten laundry and boost detergent, as well as an insect deterrent, sprinkled around baseboards and points of entry. I am trying it for the toilet bowl for sure,
